Kamiak Butte

Kamiak Butte is the closest real hike to me, a three mile loop with a gorgeous view of the Palouse. Or five and a half miles if you take the longer route, but dogs aren’t allowed. The hike is especially beautiful when wildflowers are at their peak in the late April or Early May, and the top of the Butte is covered with Arrowleaf Balsamroot.

You can walk up the long, steadily sloping shady side, or take the short but steep walk from the parking lot (the signs direct you to take the steeper path first, and come back the long way). The middle, a gently sloping ridge along the top, has all the views. College students often set up a hammock along somewhere along the ridge.
This rock looks like the face of an old Indian.
I always look forward to passing beneath the arch created by this leaning tree.

There’s wonderful views from the butte in every season. Here’s a picture taken in fall.

That’s my sister, my husband, and my dog, along the top. I’ve done this hike many times with friends.
